Note that washing wooden blinds with water is not advisable, because of the potential damage it can cause, but there are times when it is necessary especially when there are build ups of excess dirt and grime. If you clean them regularly, you should wash them once or twice a year. However, when doing the washing, make sure you use good quality wood soap and use a damp, not wet cloth or towel, for wiping. Wipe each slat with a soft dry cloth or a paper towel for better cleaning.

Another good tip is to mix 1 cup hot water and 2 TBS lemon oil to protect them till their next bath time. Use a clean cloth or towel to wring out excess water.

  • Check the blinds to see if there are any spots or stains.

If you find any stains or spots on your wooden blinds, take a paper towel and rub on the affected area to remove the stains. Make sure you frequently dab it on a soft cloth and the stain off while using the wood cleaner. It is advisable to brush downward rather than upward to avoid the slats from unhooking while dusting. You can close the blinds to make them flat and use a light feather to dust them when performing a light cleaning.

Another simple way to clean window blinds is to use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment. Make sure you only use a soft brush as other attachment might damage your wooden blinds. Wearing a pair of cotton gloves and running your fingers through each slat is another simple and easy way to clean the blinds. Moreover, you can wear gloves and rub a fabric softener sheet between your hands while rubbing your hands along each slat. This will help you reduce the buildup and reduce static electricity that attracts dirt.

Alternatively, you can dip a soft paintbrush (preferably of the size that fits the width of the slats) in liquid fabric softener and wipe it across the slats. If the blinds are too dirty, then apply a little oil soap on the blinds and wipe them down.

You have spent a small fortune to decorate your space with wood window blinds, doing a little light cleaning on your real wood blinds and keeping them in good condition, can make them last for generations.
